Common Bean Diversity in Community Seed Banks
The seed banks in Uganda are rich in diversity of common beans based on their various geographical locations country wide and other factors. The following are some of the common bean varieties availabe:
Akeru Long
Locally identified by the name Akeru Long. It is described as a local, white medium sized bush type and easy to cook. It is resistant to anthracnose, and hallo blight but moderately resistant to aphids and snails.It can commonly be found in Nakaseke.
Akeru Short
Locally identified by the name Akeru Short.It is described as a local white small sized bush type and easy to cook.It is resistant to anthracnose and hallo blight but moderately resistant to aphids and snails.It can commonly be found in Nakaseke.
Yellow Long
Locally identified by the name Yellow Long.It is described as local, yellow medium sized bush type.It is moderately resistant to to bean fly, aphids and wilting but low resistance to anthracnose.It can commonly be found in the Nakaseke areas.
Yellow Short
Locally identified by the name Yellow Short.It is described as a local yellow, small sized bush-type with pink flowers.It is moderately resistant to to bean fly, aphids and wilting but low resistance to anthracnose.It can commonly be found in Nakaseke.
Nambale Short
Locally known by the name Nambale short . It is described as local bush type, small, red and white spotted seed, early maturing. Takes short time to cookIt is moderately resistant to aphids, caterpillar, anthracnose, bean fly, root rot, hallo blight and BCMV.It is prevalent in the areas of Kiziba, Rubaya and Nakaseke.

Locally known by the name Bukanja. It is described as Local, early maturing, climbing bean with white flowers. The seed is white with black spots when mature.this variety has a high resistance to aphids and Angular leaf spotThe variety is commonly found in the area Rubaya.
Bwiseri
Locally known by the name Bwiseri. It is described as Local, small red seeded climbing bean that matures early and easy to cook. It is resistant to aphids and moderately resistant to caterpillars. It is prevalent in the areas of Rubaya.
Gantagasize
Locally known by the name Gantagasize. It is described as modern (Improved) early maturing variety. Bush type with big light yellow white and purple flowers.It is prevalent in the areas of Kiziba.
Kabwejagure
Locally identified by the name Kabwejagure.It is described as a local small light yellow climbing type with white flowers and takes a short time to cook.It has low resistance to aphids and moderate resistance to wilting and yellowing.It can commonly be found in the Rubaya sub-region

Locally known by the name NABE 13. It is described as modern(improved) bush type with medium sized red seeds.It has a low resistance to aphids, birds and yellowing but moderately resistant to rats.It is prevalent in the areas of Rubaya.
NABE 14
Locally identified by the name NABE 14. It is described as a modern(improved) bush type, with big sized red seeds.It has a low resistance to aphids, birds and yellowing but moderately resistant to rats.It can commonly be found in the Rubaya sub-region
Kanyobwa Short
Locally known by the name Kanyobwa short, It is described as a Local, bush type, red in colour with medium size seeds, pink flowers, matures early and takes a short time to cook.It is moderately resistant to aphids, root rot, Bean Common Mosaic Virus (BCMV) and moderately eaten by rats but resistant to wiltingThis variety can commonly be found in the areas of Nakaseke, Kiziba and Rubaya.

Kasirira
Locally known by the name Kasirira. It is described as aLocal, bush type with small black beans. It is resistant to rats and moderately affected by small black ants. This variety can commonly be found in the areas of Nakaseke.
Katosire
Locally identified by the name Katosire.It is described as a local brown, small sized bush type.It is moderately resistant to aphids, root rot and small black ants.It can commonly be found in Kiziba.
