Community Seed Banks In Uganda
Ongako Community Seed Bank | Omoro
Ongako Community Seed bank is a legally registered entity established in 2017. It has a number of farmer training groups.
With about 68 members and a majority female.
The members have taken time to get land for establiching the field bank facitiy with aid from ESAF
and are almost done with the construction and set up of the facility.
the farmers have a committee which handles adminstrative issues and are focused on
working with other seed banks to grow. The major aim of the farmers being to conserve diversity, revive varieties
that have previously been described as lost and also elevate its farmers and the seed bank as a whole.
The crop species currently conserved at the seed bank are about 60 varities
with the hope of of even adding more.
The most common crops grown in this seed bank are cassava, beans and sorghum among others.
